Åska — Dragonfly-class Merchant Vessel

Dragonfly Class | Merchant / Cargo Transport | Former TMF Auxiliary

The Åska is a modified Dragonfly-class merchant vessel, built for the less glamorous but essential work of carrying cargo, passengers and supplies across settled space and beyond. Rugged, versatile and designed for extended independent operations, the Dragonfly class favours reliability and adaptability over the polished lines of purpose-built military ships.

The Åska, boasts a distinctly intriguing history. Originally constructed as a civilian vessel, she was requisitioned by the Terran Military Fleet during the TMF–Vardi conflict and adapted for military service. Various enhancements, including additional armor, upgraded thrusters, and reinforced systems, were implemented to improve her survivability. External hardpoints enabled the fitting of mission-specific equipment and weapons as necessary. After the conflict, the Åska returned to civilian service, maintaining some of those military modifications.

Her broad, multi-level hull offers substantial internal cargo capacity while also providing comfortable accommodation for a relatively small crew. Two auxiliary shuttles are housed in recessed docking bays along the port and starboard sides, partially exposed to space but accessible directly from inside the vessel. This design facilitates personnel and cargo operations without compromising the main internal cargo spaces.

Unlike dedicated warships, the Åska isn't intended to confront enemies directly. Her lingering military modifications grant her greater resilience in the uncertain regions where independent merchants often operate. With armor, powerful drives, and configurable external hardpoints, she is capable of adapting when running away is either impossible—or simply comes too late.

By the time Niall Hayes discovers the ageing Dragonfly-class vessel in a repair bay on Rhoner III, the Åska carries the scars of both military and civilian service. Yet beneath her worn hull lies a vessel still capable of traversing great distances from home.

For Niall, her name holds a significance that makes the decision to restore her almost inevitable. The Åska was never built to change history; she was built to keep flying.
