At just 52 metres, the Griffen is an exceptionally compact deep reconnaissance vessel compared with TMF crafts. Its small crew of two to four operates a vessel designed for deep reconnaissance, surveillance, and probe insertion, allowing the Hawks to explore regions without deploying larger vessels or unnecessarily revealing their presence.
Much of the Griffen's capability lies in its advanced sensors and specialized reconnaissance systems. Deployable probes can be inserted ahead of the vessel or left behind as passive observation and communication nodes, extending the Hawks' reach into areas that are too dangerous—or simply too unknown—for continuous crewed operations.
Its relatively small size also makes the Griffen difficult to detect and provides the maneuverability needed to operate in the Badlands. Rather than depending on heavy armor, this light combat spacecraft survives through situational awareness, speed, and the wisdom of discretion.
However, reconnaissance in the Badlands comes with its risks.
The Griffen thus carries a light combat capability sufficient to engage small hostile crafts, conduct limited interdiction, or defend itself while retreating from a threat. It is not designed as a miniature warship, and a Griffen commander has little incentive to test the vessel against a dedicated TMF combatant. Its weaponry primarily ensures that encountering something dangerous does not automatically lead to a one-way mission.
This distinction is emblematic of the Hawks themselves. Their vessels prioritize practicality, independence, and field experience over the standardized naval architecture of the TMF. Griffens are meticulously maintained yet adapted to the realities faced by their crews, giving them a functional, almost predatory appearance that starkly contrasts with the clean lines of conventional fleet vessels.
A Griffen may spend days or weeks operating beyond established patrol routes, quietly mapping a region, observing traffic, or investigating something that ought not to be there.
For the Hawks, that is precisely their objective.
Go where others cannot. See what others cannot. Return unseen.
